One of our personal favorites is the wine made at Chateau Franc-Cardinal. A petite chateau and operated by the Holzberg family, there are a lot of things to love about the Chateau. The winery is in the final stages of certifying as an organic wine producer, meaning they focus on the purity of the delicious fruit flavors. It is a family run business, full of passion, something we always respect and admire. What's the number one thing to love about Chateau Franc-Cardinal? The unbelievably delicious wine.

Both the highly touted 2005 and 2010 vintages were extraordinary—balanced and elegant in a way that is uniquely Bordeaux. However, the 2016 vintage has something the more famous vintages never had: It has a 91 Point Wine Enthusiast rating and is an Editor’s, Choice Winner. A blend of Merlot (72%), Cabernet Franc (24%) and Malbec (4%), the palate is sheer elegance. Plum and prune notes lead on the fruit, balanced by a slight smokiness and even a hint of almond. It is simply unbeatable.

ABV: 13.5%

SYLVANUS ESTATE “THE HOME BLOCK” YAMHILL-CARLTON PINOT NOIR 2017

Barrels selected for this wine include Pommard, 777 and 115/Mt. Enjoy this fine, age-worthy wine with rich foods like duck breast with orange-cherry marmalade or grilled lamb with rosemary and currant demi-glace.

Best now thru 2024

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0245/5302/9713/products/Burrell-School-pinot_ecd9a3ab-a55f-4821-9f18-a95c7136ff9f.jpg?v=1609874171
teachers-pet
Burrell School Vineyards "Teacher's Pet" Chardonnay 2018

"Teacher's Pet" Chardonnay 2018

ABV: 14.1%

Vineyard Information: Our estate vines are situated on a sloping south-west exposure at a 1,560-foot elevation in the cool-climate Santa Cruz Mountains. The Shiraz provides both black and red fruits, dark earthy notes, spice and fennel whilst the Viognier compliments this with floral, gingery and apricot highlights. Again, the palate is well balanced. Deep and rich in flavour, long and fine in structure and with an acid line that tightens the whole wine up providing sleek shape and long lingering finish. As with the nose, the palate benefits from time in glass. Chardonnay is a single vineyard wine originating from the Gold Coast Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA. With San Pablo Bay in view from the vineyard, the fruit for this wine is protected with a blanket of fog throughout the summer mornings, retaining the freshness in this wine. Having gone through full malolactic fermentation in barrel, the bright apple aromatics still jump out of the glass. Retaining some mid-palate bodyweight from barrel fermentation, it is surprising how clean this wine is on the palate. Great with food and will hold up to medium term cellaring.

HARVEST NOTES:
The 2018 growing season began with a relatively dry spring and just a bit below normal rainfall over the winter. As a wine "newbie", traveling to surf destinations on the Atlantic shores of Europe, I found that these were the wines that could deliver quality on a very consistent level while I was on a surf-bum budget. Later, as a pro with more than 34 harvests under my belt, I still like a good Syrah - regardless of price... I now understand even better why this variety fits my palate then - and continues to do so now. It all has to do with balance and layering; Syrah is less tannic than Cabernet and a bit more layered than Pinot Noir. These traits, and the slight earthy spiciness we get in this region make Syrah a natural companion to a wide range of foods - and thus wins the vote in my heart (and palate). This Syrah is a blend of Dakine, Goosechase, and Ledbetter (old Preston Ranch) vineyard blocks. At release, 2016 shows a lot of blue-fruit nuances and some dry herb notes, all directly arising from a very even growing season. A bit of floral character and some bacon fat add complexity and marry well with the wild-fennel note I always get from Russian River Valley Syrah.

Cheers,
Oded Shakked - Owner & Winemaker of Longboard Vineyards

Wine Dogma: This blend comes from sites of different soil compositions, and quite different individual terroirs. Accordingly, I treat the lots individually, opting for open-top fermentation for the Dakine and traditional closed-top for the Ledbetter and Goosechase lots. I use a blend of Burgundy and Bordeaux barrels to age the wines on the fine lees for about 9 months, then rack them off the lees and age them an additional year in the same barrels. It is nestled at the bottom of an east-facing hill on Westside Road in Healdsburg. Two blocks of vines make up this wine: The large block is planted to Syrah, clone 7 on a modern vertical trellis. The small block is planted 4 feet by 4 feet and is farmed exclusively by hand, vines are trained and cane-pruned on a modified Guillot system. This small block is made of 11 rows of 6 varieties that become the "spice rack" for making this wine. Unlike the blending that occurs in the laboratory of a winery, this is a field blend; all the grapes are harvested and fermented together in one tank.

The Dakine Syrah is made for aging. The cool growing site combined with minimalistic winemaking practices works synergistically to produce a wine that develops over many years. At release, the wine is dominated by dark fruit aromas and flavors with a generous mid-palate and a finish marked by a balanced acidity. As it ages, earth, roasted coffee, and fresh mushroom notes begin to show, as well as a light wild fennel note.

2016 was a great vintage for Syrah in the Russian River Valley. The grapes were destemmed and crushed at the winery, cold-soaked for three days, and then fermented to dryness by our winery's "resident" yeast (that means no commercial yeast was added). As with all the wines of Longboard, the point of this wine is to strike a balance of components that delivers a complex and layered experience that is true to the variety and the growing season.

Cheers,
Oded Shakked - Owner & Winemaker of Longboard Vineyards

Composition: 89 % Syrah, 2.5% Carignane, 2.0% Grenache, 2.5% Malbec, 2.0% Zinfandel, 1.5% Petit Syrah
Appellation: Russian River Valley
Fermentation: 3 Day cold-soak, Open top native fermentation
Aging: 24 months in French Oak barrels, 30% New
Alcohol: 14.5 %
TA: 6.6g/L
pH: 3.68
Production: 129 Cases

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0245/5302/9713/products/Russian-River-Dakine-Vineyard-Syrah-2017.jpg?v=1592848893
russian-river-pinot-noir-2017
Longboard Vineyards Russian River Pinot Noir 2017

Longboard Vineyards Russian River Pinot Noir 2017

Few areas in the world are blessed with just the right balance of warm days and cool nights that are needed to produce great Pinot Noir. The Russian River Valley appellation is one of those areas - and we take full advantage of it. To begin with, we choose to work with growers who know this varietal and we collaborate with them to grow and pick the fruit when flavors are well developed but before any overly pruney or raisiny characters show up.

We then ensure grapes are hand-picked at night or at first light and delivered cool to the winery where they are de-stemmed (not crushed) and allowed to cold soak for three days before fermentation is allowed to start. Lots are either inoculated or allowed to ferment on their own, a decision we make once we assess the quality of the incoming fruit. Once the alcoholic fermentation is complete, wines are drawn into French oak barrels ( about 3 0% new) where they complete the malolactic fermentation and age on the fine lees until late spring. We aim to make a Pinot Noir that is layered and complex, one that evolves in your glass and keeps delivering new nuances. As with all of the Longboard wines, balance and elegance are what we strive for.

The 2017 vintage was blessed with great weather early on, the Pino! Noir from this year exhibits ample fruit character when young (plum, strawberry, black cherry) and slowly develop secondary black tea and rose-petal aromas. I soon realized that when I go to lunch, that is the wine I reach for to start a springtime or summer meal. To me, this variety makes a wine who s flavors most resemble the flavors of the fresh grapes at harvest time. When balanced, it also has enough acidity to make it a perfect match with food.

Our Sauvignon Blanc aims to layer the minerality we love in wines from Europe with the great fruit character we are blessed with in California. We achieve this by fermenting about a third of the wine in French oak barrels to gain some weight and a delicate "dusting" of vanilla while fermenting the rest in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness. When released, the wine shows ample tropical fruit and floral characters, balanced by a lively acidity. As it ages over the next few years, some honey and apple pie character will start developing, adding richness and depth to the wine.

We always recommend you serve the wine chilled but not too cold, somewhere around 50 degrees is cold enough. Paired with afresh green salad with fennel shavings and succulent ruby grapefruit sections or with your favorite fresh seafood (we just love it with Sashimi or a spicy Thai dish), this wine has proved to be quite versatile in pairing with imaginative cuisine. Remember to always trust your palate and share the good times with friends and family.
